Summer Art Programs

Explore arts and culture with Salida Creativity Lab Summer 2017! Dive into an imaginative theme using visual arts and crafts, drama, movement, music, or literature. Explore various art mediums and techniques as you paint, draw, create, or perform! Learn about famous works of art or literature. Create your own pieces, and bring imaginative themes to life as you read or act out classic children’s stories and poems, play theatre games, explore movement, costumes, or face paint!
See below for summer art programs for ages 4-7 at Children’s Discovery Ranch and Salida Early Childhood Center; for ages 6 and up at the Boys and Girls Club; and ages 7-12 at Salida Montessori Charter School, E St Campus.

Morning camps: Campers need to bring lunch, 1 snack, and water bottle, sun hat and change of clothes daily. No nuts or nut products please.

Afternoon camps:  Campers need to bring snack, water bottle, and sun hat. No nuts or nut products please.

June 5-8; Monday-Thursday, 9:00am-12:30pm
Location: Children’s Discovery Ranch
Ages: 4-7 years old. $80
The Children’s Discovery Ranch is our setting for a week of nature and folk- inspired literature, arts, crafts, and music. Join us for arts and crafts using elements and textures found in nature: twigs, rocks, sand, and mud. Learn about American folk artist Grandma Moses as we study her detailed paintings of farm life and rural countrysides. Create Euro-American and Gee’s Bend quilt-inspired collages; hear stories from classics The
Little House on the Prairie and Charlotte’s Web; curl up around our pretend campfire as we sing along to delightful Smithsonian folkways children’s collections of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Ella Jenkins, and more. Some artwork collected for our outdoor art show at the Children’s Discovery Ranch in August. Country picnic on our last day.

June 12-15; Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-12:30pm
Location: Salida Early Childhood Center
Ages: 4-7 years old. $85
An English garden is our inspiration for arts, crafts, literature, and music this week. Explore garden textures such as dried flowers, leaves, lace, and burlap, and create garden inspired art. Draw and paint flowers, create a flower arrangement, or a garden mosaic. Read about and investigate topiaries, bird nests, and more. Listen to gardening poems and read stories such as The Gardener, Miss Rumphius, Linnea in Monet’s Garden, Night Gardener, Grandpa Green, and excerpts from Mandy and The Secret Garden. We’ll celebrate with a garden tea party our last day!

Location: Salida Early Childhood Center
Ages: 4-7 years old. $85
Start spreading the news, we’re leaving today! From Salida to NYC, we’ll take an imaginary journey to Broadway and hear about the city of dazzling lights and American musical theatre. Get ready to tap your toes and move your bodies to the fun music of Broadway as you act, sing, and dance. Discover and explore musical theatre and Broadway terminology through books, show photos, and music. Explore the stories, characters, and songs from beloved musicals such as Annie, Mary Poppins, The Wizard of OZ, The Lion King, You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, Seussical, Willie Wonka, The Sound of Music, and more! We will have costume play, mask-making, and stories. Join us for a fun introduction to musical theatre for young children!

July 17-20, Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-12:30pm
Location: Salida Early Childhood Center
Ages: 4-7 years old. $85.
Gather your brushes, palette, and paints as we enter the artist’s studio! Explore the artist’s space and discover supplies such as easels, rulers, color wheels, and more. We will learn about works  of classic and modern masters and their techniques- splatter, collage, mixed media and more. We will create with various mediums such as paints, pastels, clay, and printing. We will practice processes such as planning, gathering supplies, and cleaning up. Join us as we dive into the world of an artist. All materials provided. Come dressed for painting!

Superheroes on Stage! Co-directed By Jan Justis and Tina Gramann
July 3- 7 and 10-14, Monday- Friday, 1:00pm-4:30pm (no camp on Tues, July 4)
Location: Salida Boys and Girls Club, 340 E 5th St.
Ages: 6 and up. Boys and Girls Club membership fees apply.
Registration: Please register for this camp at the Salida Boys and Girls Club, 340 E 5th St. Call 719-539-9500. Campers must attend every class to participate. 

It’s a bird, it’s a plane…it’s a Super Boys and Girls Club Kid! Join us for a creative week of superhero action and fun. Together, we will create an action-packed show featuring heroes, villains, or sidekicks; each with powers or weaknesses (think kryptonite for Superman) and, when needed:  crews of minions!  Participants will learn a lot about theatre:  character development, acting, movement, stage combat, costume design, mask making, props, special effects and the thrill of creating a show!  Super alliances, choreographed battles and saving our world will come together in one performance onstage on Friday July 14th at 5:30 pm.

Comedy & Improv
June 5-8, Monday-Thursday, 1:30pm-4:30pm
Location: Salida Montessori Charter School, 349 E St. Campus
Ages: 9 and up. $65
Develop your comedic timing and improvisation skills through theatre games and improv exercises. Think on your feet as you play theatre games such as Gibberish, Freeze!, What Are You Doing?, Forward/Reverse, Slide Show, and more! Improvise scenes, characters, relationships, and scenarios. Review the “rules” of comedy such as “Always say ‘yes!’” Take creative risks in a supportive environment. Join a knee slapping showcase for family and friends as we present improv scenes on our last day!

Broadway Bound
June 12-15, Monday-Thursday, 1:30pm-4:30pm
Location: Salida Montessori Charter School, 349 E St. Campus
Ages: 9 and up. $65
Start spreading the news, we’ll be singing and dancing to our favorite show tunes! Act, sing, move, dance in this fun introduction to Broadway! Review beloved stories, scenes, characters, and music from classics such as The Lion King, Sound of Music, the Wizard of OZ, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Music Man, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Grease, and more. Discover Broadway and theatre terminology. Get ready to Razzle Dazzle as we present a fun showcase for family and friends on the last day. June 15 at 4:30pm. Please wear all-black for the showcase on the last day.

Mixed Media: Express Yourself
June 19-22, Monday- Thursday, 8:30am-12:30pm. (Please note morning time.)
Location: Salida Montessori Charter School, 349 E St. Campus
Ages: 9 and up. $85
Young artists think big, bold, and show your colors! We will study murals, paintings, street art, as well as community artists and movements through stories such as Maybe Something Beautiful: How Art Transformed a Neighborhood about Mexican artist Rafael Lopez, a 2017 ALA notable book; and Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michele Basquiat by Javaka Steptoe, the 2017 Caldecott Medal winner. Students will explore and discuss themes, messages, and histories. We will roll up our sleeves and explore techniques for large scale painting, collage, and assemblage. Then we will create our own self- expressive pieces combining uniques materials such as scrap wood, found objects, photos, text, and more. Young artists express yourself!

Monster MashUp: Puppet Creations
June 26-29, Monday- Thursday, 1:30pm-4:30pm
Location: Salida Montessori Charter School, 349 E St. Campus
Ages: 7-10.  $65
Explore classic monsters, dragons, and beasts from beloved stories and literature such as Where the Wild Things Are, The NeverEnding Story, Abiyoyo, and more.  Maybe the Jabberwocky, a Whangdoodle, or Minpins will be your inspiration for your own monster creation. We’ll use felt, feathers and found objects to make monster-inspired puppets and work together to create tales of our own. Our monster puppets take center stage on our last day in a puppet show for family and friends!

Young Shakespeare: The Tempest
July 17-20, Monday-Thursday, 1:30pm-4:30pm
Location: Salida Montessori Charter School, 349 E St. Campus
Ages: 9 and up. $65
Discover Shakespeare’s fantasy play about Prospero and his daughter Miranda who have been living on a deserted island for twelve years. Where are they from, and how did they get there? Soon we meet King Alonso and his son Ferdinand as they too become shipwrecked on the island. Meet the magical sprite Ariel and Caliban the servant. How will everyone return home across the tempest tossed sea? Will kingdoms be restored? With the help of your good hands: Gentle breath of yours my sails Must fill! Immerse yourself in Shakespeare’s verse, and take a role or two. Choose a costume, act out scenes, and help Prospero and kingdom return safely across the seas in one of Shakespeare’s final plays.

Cheeky Medieval Castle: Create a Script
July 31-August 3, Monday-Thursday, 9am-4pm; perform on August 3rd at 4pm
Location: Salida Montessori Charter School, 349 E St. Campus
Ages: 9 and up. $125
(Must read the following with a British accent:) Move aside King Arthur, Monty Python, and Princess Bride! Will  broadsword wielding knights, lords and ladies in waiting, or fire breathing dragons inspire our plot? Only the cast can decide as you work together to bring humor and light to an original tale and perform for our courtly families on the last day. Have fun storming the castle!
